Inti Raymi Tour
During the time of the Incas the Inti Raymi or “Sun Festivity” was the most important feast of the four festivals celebrated in Cusco as Inca Garcilaso de la Vega recounts. This feast marked the beginning of new year, and was dedicated to the mythological origin of the Inca. During nine days of celebration had been dances and sacrifices. The last Inti Raymi with an Inca emperor was in 1535. The Inca with the priest “ask” to God Inti (sun) return the favor with sun rays to fecundate the earth and give welfare to the children of great Empire of Tahuantisuyo. The sacred fire was renewed with a concave gold bracelet that was used against sunlight. The sacred fire was taken to the Koricancha where the acllas guarded it. During the ceremony was sacrificed a llama to predict the year. After there had been a military parade and when military Incas has gone away the fest started during many days.
Nowadays, the Inti Raymi cannot be in this way, it is a spectacle to tourist and local people which encourages excitement and people involvement. The representation involves thousands of people; it begins in front of the Koricancha where a fictional Inca (king) invoke to the Sun. The spectators, meanwhile, are in the Sacsayhuaman esplanade waiting the cortege along the street. The parade pass with Inca in his litter carried by settlers from the four corners. After a llama is sacrificed and the Inca invokes to his father the Sun. The ceremony ends with the final words of the Inca in the Quechua language.
