Summary

One of the most extraordinary places that is known worldwide for supporting the greatest biodiversity on earth, recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. Its great diversity is a consequence of its location where the Andes meet the Amazon. Its altitudinal range means it supports a variety of habitats such as: Puna grassland, Cloud forest, lowland Amazon rainforest, rivers and lakes (cochas). In its pristine forests one can find huge trees of over 40 metres high, and among the most remarkable animals one can observe Jaguar, Giant Otter, Black-faced Black Spider Monkey, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Black Caiman, Harpy Eagle and seven species of Macaws; as well as many beautiful butterflies, colourful frogs, and amazing insects. It is one of the few areas in the world that still supports groups of people living in their ancestral way in harmony with their environment. The low basin of the River Manu is marked by the exuberance of the Amazon plain. Five zones are recommended for tourism, each with a high diversity of flora and fauna: Salvador, Otorongo, Juárez (these are lakes), Pakitza and Limonal. In this place is a great variety of routes and paths to appreciate the beauty of the tropical forest. Also worthy of mention are the horseshoe-shaped lakes or cochas where it is possible to observe species that have disappeared in other ecosystems, such as the river wolf and the black caiman.  The forest is other attractive that is along the Manu river where is not only possible observe a variety of flora but lot of fauna. The lakes are the main attraction where many species go there. The swamp supports the typical fauna as the macaw and the variety of parrots whom eat clay.

Itinerary

Lima – Cusco

Day 01.- The great opportunity to appreciate the Inca culture.

Arrival to Alejandro Astete airport, reception and transfer to chosen hotel; general information you will be given by the Antara guide. In the afternoon city tour of imperial city of Cusco with the guide, it begins at Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, the Sun Palace or Koricancha, visitors can see typical Inca streets; also, visit to ruins of Sacsayhuaman located in the high side of city, this place is ideal to take pictures, then the Quenco amphitheater, Puca Pucara, the “the bath of Ñusta”, Tambomachay. Return to hotel.

Cusco – Sacred Valley of the Incas

Day 02.- Get ready for a remarkable experience and appreciate the large agricultural fields of corn, and the variety of potato.

After breakfast the guide will go to your hotel for Sacred Valley of the Incas trip, it begins with a lovely experience, in route to Pisac we will visit the Handicraft center Awanachancha, see the camelids like llama, alpaca, vicuña animal of fine wool, and the guanaco. After, we will go to handicraft market of Pisac, where locals keep an Inca commercial system called “barter” it is interchange of product by product. Then a delicious rural lunch, in the country estate house “Orihuela”, where there are some Inca pieces and paintings of the School Cusquean, finally, we will visit the Inca town Ollantaytambo, where the streets and houses of Inca style are preserved. Return to hotel.

Cusco – Machu Picchu

Day 03.- this is, without a doubt, the opportunity to appreciate the Inca culture in all its splendor.

After the breakfast. You will go to train station and the Antara guide will give you information about the tour before boarding the train to Machu Picchu citadel. On the road we will see the snow mountains, the begin of Inca Trail, Inca terraces that were used for agriculture; finally, we arrive to Aguas Calientes. We will realize the change of climate; the guide will carry you to the bus to climb the ruins. We will visit the “the Lost City of the Incas” the opportunity to take lot of pictures, then the lunch and Night in hotel of Aguas Calientes.

Machu Picchu – Cusco

Day 04.- The option to visit the Inca bridge, climb the Wayna Picchu, or the Gate of the Sun.

Very early. Second chance to explore the citadel, maybe you want to climb Wayna Picchu (young mountain), and take awful pictures of the citadel, or go to the Gate of the Sun “intipunku” in Quechua language, later we will return to the Cusco city. Hotel night.

Cusco – Puerto Maldonado

Day 05.- Special day to visit the Tambopata Reserve, we will appreciate the full flora and fauna in the Amazonia.

Pick you up from Puerto Maldonado airport and transfer to lodge, the Antara guide will give you information about the jungle, the different animal species; we will notice due to deforestation the landscape changes up to Tambopata National Reserve. We will enjoy with the landscapes, lunch at boat, we will arrive to the lodge. We will continue with detail information by the Antara guide, the purpose is to avoid unpleasant surprises and your visit will be pleasant and unforgettable. We will continue exploring and see the sunset. after the specialized Antara guide will inform you about Caymans and some animal we see in route. Dinner to relax, the Antara guide will be always with you, we will to search Caymans, this is the opportunity to take pictures.

Lake Cocococha

Day 06.- Beautiful day to enjoy the Amazonia.

After breakfast in the lodge between 5:00 to 5:30 am, we will visit the lake Cocococha on the way you may see various forest types as: Bamboo, floodplain forest, upland forest to the lake at 5.5.km; the walk is between 2 to 2 ½ hours approximately, on the way you will be able to see birds like tanagers, turkeys, nun birds, some woodpeckers, monkeys, larger mammals and insects.

We will wait for the giant otter either on a blind spot or paddling around the lake, after a while you can also paddle on a catamaran in the allowed area only for tourist-use. Return to the lodge for a break.  Lunch 13:00 hours. A short break, after, we will go up a 42 meters high tower where we will have a wonderful view of the forest. The Antara guide will explain you about the vertical layers of the forest, you will have a specular view of the jungle and see the sunset. Dinner to relax, then a night walk in search of the many creatures such as insects and if we are lucky bigger animals.

Collpa (Clay lick) of Macaw

Day 07.- Peruvian birds from the Amazonia.

Very early at 5:20 am we will visit the Collpa of parrots, located to 10 minutes in boat from the lodge, there we will different species of parrots and parakeets eating clay, we will return to the lodge to breakfast (7:30 to 8:00 am) after a rest to relax us.

At 9:30 am we will visit to a local farm to see local people cultivate a normal plantation. Return to the lodge for lunch. Then, a short break to relax.

At 14:30 we will walk to the lagoon Chica to 20 minutes (700 m.a.s.l. / 2,296), we will see the birds and appreciate the nature, souvenir photo shoots. Return to lodge, a rest. Dinner and we will walk at night to search the diversity of animals and insects, if we are lucky we can see some animals.
